Q&A with Eric Uffman, Ph.D.

This issue’s featured expert is Dr. Eric Uffman. Eric has been with Chemir for 5 years and is Vice President of Chemir Analytical Services.

Q. What did you do before coming to Chemir?

A. Before coming to Chemir I was a postdoctoral research associate working at Washington University in St. Louis in the laboratory of Professor Vladimir Birman.  My research there primarily focused on nucleophilic catalysts used in kinetic resolutions of racemic alcohols.  This work resulted in several publications.  I would say that the highlight of my postdoctoral experience was right after our first communication was published when we received an email from renowned MIT Professor Gregory Fu congratulating us on our great results.

Q. In your tenure what are some of the more memorable projects you have worked on?

A. I enjoy the large “crisis management” projects that I’ve been able to manage.  I really like selecting my “Dream Team” of scientists that I know I can rely on when the clock is ticking and the work has to be done right the first time.  Typically, these kinds of projects revolve around potential product recalls or scenarios where spoilage of product (such as food) is a possibility.

Q. What do you like best about working at Chemir?

A. I enjoy the variety of the projects and the customers that I deal with on a day-to-day basis but it really is the people that I work with everyday that make my job great and make Chemir a special place.

Q. I hear you’re a bit of a sports nut.  If you could attend any 5 sporting events what would they be?

A. In order they would be…

5. The Masters
4. Kentucky Derby
3. 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil (already planning on that one!)
2. A World Series Game 7 win by the St. Louis Cardinals
1. NCAA Football National Championship by the Missouri Tigers
