New Instrument Measures Adhesive on Medical Devices

Chemir Analytical Services' scientists are utilizing a new instrument to measure forces of adhesion on drug delivery products. The recent purchase of an Instron 5542, or "mini-Instron" provides highly sensitive testing of adhesive products and is useful for testing transdermal or other drug delivery products that need to adhere to skin or tissue. This new instrument enhances Chemir's physical testing services by allowing Chemir to handle smaller and more delicate samples.

"This instrument can measure very small tensile strengths, from forces of .1 N to 50 N. It is also capable of measuring force/work of adhesion under many circumstances, evaluating such variables as moisture, pH, or temperature effects on an adhesive," says Eric Uffman, Ph.D., Project Leader at Chemir Analytical Services.

As experts in physical testing for a wide variety of materials, Chemir Analytical Services will be exhibiting at PharmaMedDevice 2007, a new conference specifically targeted to the combination medical device industry. Drug-coated stents, skin patches, and implants containing drug product are examples of combination products that may require tensile strength measurement. Chemir offers physical testing for wide variety of components and materials, in a cGMP/GLP, FDA registered facility located in suburban St. Louis.
